AI Moneyball for Sports

PlayVision is the AI Moneyball for Sports: the future for scouting, recruiting, and playing the game. Basketball teams upload their practices or games, and PlayVision uses AI and computer vision to automatically tag and analyze the film, giving coaches and scouts 10 times the information on their players and their opponents. PlayVision also uses algorithms to rank every single college and professional basketball player in the country with over 40 different metrics from tracking and play-by-play data. Hello everyone! We’re Anish and Marc, the Co-Founders of PlayVision!

TL;DR: PlayVision lets basketball teams automatically analyze their practices and games to get advanced stats on their players, opponents, and college or high school recruits. We use AI and computer vision to get insights based on their tracking data.

The Problem:

❌ Coaches spend over 75% of their week watching film and manually tagging different stats.

❌ College Teams spend $250K+ on services like HUDL, Synergy, HDI, and other different products just to watch film and scout players.

❌ There are up to 25x more coaches between teams across Division 1 basketball — most programs lack the man-power to watch the same amount of film and create a comprehensive game-plan.

❌ College athletes are now able to get paid via their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). Teams are scrambling trying to figure out how much players are worth.

Our Solution:

An interactive platform that lets coaches upload their film and get the insights they want. We track every player, every movement, every decision made on the court.

With our database, we also feature:

🏀 Our algorithms that rank every player in the country over the last 10 years.

🏀 Custom indexes where teams leverage over 40 metrics to create their own stats to rank players.

🏀 Automated scouting reports that give coaches 10x the insights on their players and opponents in 10% of the time.

Our Story:

I, Anish, was a massive sports fan growing up. I couldn’t play college athletics due to an eye surgery, so I joined Cal Athletics as a scout. I saw first-hand how tedious the manual film analysis was, having to stay late in the office with coaches trying to finish the games we set out to do.

The timing couldn't have been better. Marc, fresh from two years of AI and computer vision research at the Mayo Clinic, happened to be in my AI in SportsTech class at Berkeley. I pitched him my problem, and within minutes, we were deep in discussion about how AI and computer vision could crack it.

Leveraging my connections in the college space, we started getting validation from coaches, expressing the same pain points I had. We’ve partnered with teams from the SEC, BIG 10, and BIG EAST conferences, and you could be next!

How did your company get started? (i.e., How did the founders meet? How did you come up with the idea? How did you decide to be a founder?)

After multiple eye surgeries ended his playing days, Anish stayed connected to the game as a scout for Cal Athletics while earning his CS degree. He spent countless hours with coaches manually tracking stats and knew there had to be a better way.

When he met his co-founder Marc (who had been doing computer vision research at the Mayo Clinic) in an AI in sports tech class, they realized they could automate the entire film analysis process.
