Chemical Copilot for Pharma and Biotech

b-12 is an AI copilot that plans how to create and test new molecules for chemists. We're like a GPS for chemistry, helping pharma companies plan the recipes for new drugs, accelerating early-stage drug discovery from years to months. Andres built the first AI agent that can autonomously think and make molecules in a robotic lab, published in Nature Machine Intelligence (750+ citations), and won the best paper award at the NeurIPS AI for Science conference. Zlatko is a 3x National Chemistry Olympiad champion, competed at IChO level, and medicinal chemist who has worked at Roche and leading lab robotics companies. He has an extensive network of hundreds of chemists across Europe. We are publishing a groundbreaking paper in Nature demonstrating our AI's ability to optimally plan chemical recipes. We run paid pilots with big pharma companies showing that our platform planned a set of experiments that achieved full conversion in a single attempt, eliminating the usual 8-12 iteration cycle.

at b-12 we are developing AI agents for automated workflows in chemistry and pharma R&D, as a way of manifestating chemical super intelligence in physical world. our long-term goal is to create autonomous labs that can perform complex, multistep syntheses with minimal human intervention.

Before b-12, Andres built the first AI agent to plan and make molecules in a robotic lab (750+ cites in Nature Machine Intelligence, and Best Paper at NeurIPS AI for Science), along with several other works in agents and LLMs for chemistry (1100+ citations). He was an Intern at Max Planck (Math in Science), and PhD at EPFL (AI+Chemistry). Automation is the future of chemistry, but integration and human operability is the hidden demon nobody talks about. We're fixing that at b-12.

TL;DR:

Drug discovery is slow, and it costs billions of dollars. The bottleneck in early discovery is chemical synthesis. b-12 is building a full stack of AI agents to deliver planning and robotic executions of experiments, in minutes, not months. Our team has developed custom robots for chemistry (Chemspeed), orchestrated AI agents for lab control (EPFL & IBM), and is translating this into a powerful and easy-to-use product.

Ask: Are you running chemistry experiments or chemical robots? Do you know someone who is? Email us at founders@b12-labs.com to be added to our pilot program. See below for details.

The problem:

Drug Discovery is slow:

  • It takes 10+ years and over $2 billion to discover a new drug.
  • 2 in 10000 compounds make it.
  • Chemistry execution is very slow.

Experiments take time! Designing good experiments and trial and error in the lab are big factors.

Software for chemists is fragmented:

  • There are many solutions for many different parts of the pipeline.
  • Tools are outdated, and integration is largely missing.

Lab robots are underused:

  • Most lab robots are not accessible to scientists because they are hard to use.
  • Drag and drop software for multimillion-dollar robotic labs.
  • Lab automation engineers are hard to find.

Our Solution:

We are integrating a full stack of Agents to design experiments and write code for the robot that runs these experiments, with the tools and context needed to predict chemically meaningful results, and close the experimental loop.

Key capabilities of our Agents:

  • Streamline Experiment Planning: Our tools accelerate creation of experimental details based on literature and expert tools, and tailor the output to the user’s specific needs.
  • Unified platform: Our platform integrates several agents that are in tight communication and can go from natural language input to robotic execution in minutes.
  • No coding required - use natural language: With arbitrary input flexibility, we can control the robot the same way you would talk to your lab-mates, including inputs from previous runs, and uploading relevant documents.
  • Parallel and scalable to any lab: We are vendor agnostic, and integrate with different robotics (Chemspeed, Unchained, Opentrons, etc.) and labs performing experiments manually.

Pilot Program: Our team will work on integrating Agentic solutions tailored to your lab's specific problems, whether you use lab automation or not. We want to speed up molecular discovery.

👥 Our Team:

We are Zlatko and Andres, and in the past, we have:

  1. Worked with big pharma (Roche), Chemical Robotics (Chemspeed), and big chemical data (MaxPlanck);
  2. Pioneered AI agents for chemistry and retrosynthesis (at EPFL);
  3. Invented new chemistry;

Now we want to integrate it into a seamless platform, where anyone who wants to run experiments gets extra brainpower and an additional pair of hands.

🙏 Our Ask:

Do you know anyone in chemistry working in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry?

We would love a warm intro!

Hear from the founders

How did your company get started? (i.e., How did the founders meet? How did you come up with the idea? How did you decide to be a founder?)

Andres and Zlatko met at EPFL, while working in the Lab of Artificial Chemical Intelligence. Zlatko was doing his postdoc and Andres was doing his PhD.

How did you decide to apply to Y Combinator? What was your experience applying, going through the batch, and fundraising at demo day?

We decided to apply after we had a YC partners visit our campus at EPFL. Experience was very intense, a lot of work and great advice on how to build a startup.
